What is Neurostimulation?

Neurostimulation is a widely used chronic pain treatment procedure. Neurostimulation has been used for a number of years to greatly reduce, or in some cases, completely stop chronic pain. When other treatment options fail, neurostimulation may be a more effective alternative to a lifetime of pain medications, repeated injections and multiple surgeries. Although there have been several technological advances in both efficiency and effectiveness, neurostimulation is not a new procedure. In fact, neurostimulation has been used since 1967 and is FDA approved for treatment of neuropathic pain.

Neurostimulation may be used to treat a wide variety of nerve pain conditions; it has been shown to be most effective in:

  • Treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy
  • Treatments for pain resulting from hepatitis
  • Treatments for pain from chemotherapy and radiation
  • Treating post-operative pain from scar tissue
  • Treating chronic sciatica pain
  • Treating pain from shingles
  • Treating some types of pain in fibromyalgia patients
  • Treating chronic neck, middle, and low back pain
  • Treating chronic daily headaches and treatment-resistant migraines
Neurostimulation may also be referred to as Spinal Stimulaiton, Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) or Dorsal Column Stimulation (DCS). There are several trusted brands of neurostimulators on the market; your doctor may use one or several of these brands if it is determined you would be an ideal candidate for an implant.
